About HomeShare ACT

Shared living -- made simpler and better

HomeShare was first established by Community Connections Inc., in 2013. For 5 years our Project Manager, Lee Harrison, assisted householders and home-sharers in Canberra to develop and sustain over 60 home-sharing agreements.

Between 2013 and 2018 we matched 23 householders with 51 voluntary home-sharers. The partnerships lasted from between 9 months and over 4 years in some cases.

Householders -- homeowners, public housing tenants or people renting in the private rented sector --  made a private room available at low-rent or no-rent to the home-sharer. In return the home-sharer committed to providing an agreed number of hours support (maximum of 20) each week to the person with disability with whom they lived.

Shared living -- renewed and expanded

HomeShare ACT was re-established in 2020 thanks to a grant from the ACT Government's Affordable Housing Innovation Fund. The grant is provided by the ACT Government's Directorate of Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development.

Our expanded project

HomeShare ACT now supports home-sharing partnerships involving partners from a broader and more diverse background.

  • People with disability.

  • Older people, particularly, women, seeking to remain in their own home.

  • Informal and family carers.

  • Younger people, perhaps with lower incomes, looking to contribute time, companionship and support to others.

HomeShare. Meeting needs across the community.
